Peter Rabbit 50ps are in circulation – here’s where to find them…

The new Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit 50p

The new Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit 50p

News emerged over the weekend that the brand new Peter Rabbit 50p coin has been released into circulation. So if you’re keen to find one – now’s your chance.

Getting one of the first coins put into circulation can be quite an achievement, especially with a coin as popular as this one.

They have initially been restricted to a few key locations in the north of England, but will find their way into circulation across the UK later in the year.

If you want to try and get one now, the coins have been put in the tills of the following attractions and National Trust properties:

  • The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windemere
  • The Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead
  • Wray Castle in the Lake District
  • Hill Top in Cumbria

Don’t forget to post a picture to our Facebook or Twitter pages if you find one!

hi Robin, id also like to ask why change checker doesnt have smaller plastic coin sleeves that we can purchase for smaller coins and be able to put more coins in per sleeve. for example for the £1 coins. also they could be used for 10p,5p, 2p, 1p and older coins. ive looked on-line, but there are no 4 holed plastic sleeves (as in changechecker coin folder,i purchased) only 3 holed. will changechecker (westminster mint). i hope with me bringing up this, it can be looked into and added to your accessories. much appreciated.

when prince Charles takes the throne, will coins depicting the queen cease to be made immediately? and will this increase the value of coins bearing the queen?

  7. Scotty Boy on April 2, 2016 at 9:30 am

No need to be like that. When we say south-east or east do we mean france? Who knows of any life beyond the UK

  8. Paul Hitchmough on March 29, 2016 at 10:20 pm

Hi, do you know how many coins will be in circulation?

    • Robin Parkes on March 30, 2016 at 9:28 am

Hi Paul, not yet – demand is dictated by banks and cash centres throughout the year so we will find out probably in 2017. Thanks, Robin.

When will we know the mintages of all the 2015 coins? I am especially interested in the 50p as there were two different queens heads. Will one be rarer than the other?

      • Robin Parkes on March 30, 2016 at 10:34 am

Hi Alan, yes we’re interested to know those details here too! It’s difficult to say, The Royal Mint choose when to release the information. Suffice to say as soon as we know we will be posting about it. Thanks, Robin.

    Why not anywhere in Scotland?

    • graham meldrum on March 29, 2016 at 8:58 pm

Firstly, when they say “the North” – they really only mean the north of England. But I would imagine, despite the geographical ignorances, that it is intended where Beatrix Potter is famous for – hence Cumbria, the North of England.

      Wales doesn’t exist either

There are no pictures of these coins to tick on ‘My Collection’ on your site. Will this be updated?

    • Robin Parkes on March 29, 2016 at 4:36 pm

Hi Andrew, yes we will get onto that as soon as possible. I’m not sure anyone expected the Peter Rabbit 50p to go into circulation so early! Thanks, Robin.

  11. susan smith on March 29, 2016 at 2:52 pm

why just the north and in places you have to pay to visit, doesn’t seem right to me.

    • Robin Parkes on March 29, 2016 at 4:36 pm

Hi Susan, looks like The Royal Mint have specifically picked places related to Beatrix Potter and her life – they will be going into more general circulation later in the year though. Thanks, Robin.

    • kevin jeffrey on April 5, 2016 at 10:53 pm

it makes a change coins being released in the north-west of england. because the south and scotland always get them before us in cumbria. all rare coins on ebay are people who live in the south or scotland.

      • kevin jeffrey on April 10, 2016 at 4:59 pm

i got my peter rabbit on saturday 9/4/16 up at beatrix potter gallery at hawkshead, only 30+miles up road from me. and yes its 1st time i have had that chance to get a new coin so early. especially as i have only just got the battle of britain coin in my change on monday 4/4/16.

      • Sadoldbag on April 11, 2016 at 3:09 pm

    N. Ireland

    • Robin Parkes on March 29, 2016 at 2:44 pm

Well they will be in more general circulation later in the year so I should think they will! Thanks, Robin.

You said that only a few location in the north of the country were getting supplies of the Peter rabbit 50pence pieces. Now can you tell me here in the north of the UK (as the country) they are being released as I have relatives near Inverness and friends in Elgin which is in the north of the country ,this is the UK or Great Britain I think that is what you mean by the North or is it not really the north of the United Kingdom you mean?

    • Robin Parkes on March 29, 2016 at 11:27 am

Hi Charles, they’ve been released into National Trust properties and attractions that are relevant to the life and times of Beatrix Potter, so all around Cumbria and the Lake District. I’ve updated the post to make it clearer. Thanks, Robin.

    • graham meldrum on March 29, 2016 at 8:55 pm

Thanks Robin – for clarifying that when you say the North, you only mean England. Hopefully you will learn eventually that there is life beyond England.

      • Robert Cottrell on March 30, 2016 at 12:45 pm

If you speak to a Londoner the North is anything above Milton Keynes. So the North is very relative. No need to get salty about the situation.

      • Scotty Boy on April 2, 2016 at 9:27 am

No need t be like that. You know what she means
