Are the Beatrix Potter coins destined to be the scarcest 50p’s ever?

There is no doubt that the Beatrix Potter 50p’s have caused much excitement across the UK and we can see why they’re so popular.

Collectors all over the country are checking their change right now in an attempt to find the Peter Rabbit 50p coin and are sure to do the same when the other coins in the series are released into circulation.

BP Ebay

Ebay listing shows 2 x Circulated Peter Rabbit 50p’s sold for £31 + P&P

But the more collectors hoard these coins, the less likely you are to find one in circulation – some are selling online for 40 times their face value!

What makes these 50p coins so special?

The unique theme of this collection has been the key to its undeniable success.

ST Beatrix Potter 50p Coins with Books

Struck by The Royal Mint, this series of Beatrix Potter 50p’s celebrate the 150th anniversary of her birth. Designed by Emma Noble, these coins celebrate Beatrix Potter as the artist behind some of the  best-loved characters in children’s literature as well as some of the animals from her children’s tales.

Will these 50p’s disappear from circulation completely?

As the rest of the collection unfolds we will welcome three more familiar faces, Jemima-Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, who will appear on UK coins later in the year to complete this five piece series.

As the coins are so popular, we predict it won’t be long until they completely disappear from circulation.

We think every coin in the Beatrix Potter fifty pence series will be snapped up and will stay safely tucked away in the collections of Change Checkers all over the UK.

So if you do find one, make sure you keep it safe – a 50p Collecting revolution could be about to start!

does anyone know if all 5 coins for Beatrix potter will go out in circulation because so far I have only managed to find peter rabbit

    • the_tango_doll on September 22, 2016 at 3:50 pm

Hello All, I was at the Royal Mint Experience yesterday and there was a box of brand new Peter Rabbit coins ON DISPLAY! I thought – they should be in circulation!
Anyway, in the distance was a box labelled ‘hedgehog’ which means Mrs Tiggy-Winkle coins have been minted and are in a box awaiting distribution some time in the future.
The guide said that the ‘duck’ coins may be in circulation now.

Hi, my partner and I have only in the last month started to collect 50p’s. We’ve already gained quite a few coins as I work in retail and ask the manager when cashing up if I can go through the coins and replace with other change (for the same amount obviously). We have all the coins coming when released, we already have 3 of the Beatrix Potter coins but something strange happened last time I was going through the coins at work. Someone had spent a Peter rabbit coin in the store so I gripped that one and replaced with a 1997 50p so all was good. But the point is, why in the world would anyone want to use it as a 50p and not keep it. It looks amazing and even my child asked why would you spend it? Silly person I said. So not only will my daughter have a collection of these 50p’s but it seems like if I look hard enough, so will I ?

    • Wendy Jones on September 2, 2016 at 9:21 pm

Most people don’t even look at their coins ,and hAve no idea there are so many, or that they are so collect able .
I have everyone at work now looking at their change ,but my best find ever was a Kew Gardens 50p in my change in McDonalds !!!

    • thejacman on September 13, 2016 at 1:13 pm

If you only take 2 out of circulation, 1 for you and the other your partner and leave the rest the coins can then circulate and allow other collectors to enjoy finding them, please don’t take them all out of circulation.

  11. Andrew on August 26, 2016 at 11:08 pm

I’ve been selling the rabbit coin from a sealed bag for just 1.99 each. Been plenty around and I still have 60 left

    • Karen Woodall on September 15, 2016 at 3:36 pm

Andrew I’d like to buy one how do I contact you?

  12. Alan Clinton on August 26, 2016 at 10:54 pm

Can anyone tell me which have already been released. And if some are still not in circulation

  13. Rich on August 26, 2016 at 10:21 pm

They will be rare but i think the poor forgotten 1066 50p will be rarer by far, as thanks to the mint making money on the coins we keep and everyone is looking for the potter coins it will be the poor 1066 which will most likely forgotten and have the low mintage from lack of demand making it the rarest (but thats just my prediction)

  14. George Schomburg on August 26, 2016 at 4:22 pm

The Rabbit i think there will be a lot of them, the others wait and see.
I have 6 BU sets for grand babies.

  15. donna on August 26, 2016 at 2:22 pm

we are lucky enough to have a full sealed bag full of peter rabbits 🙂
plus some loose ones too 🙂

    • Pat Dinsdale on August 26, 2016 at 4:01 pm

Where did you get a full sealed bag from? Maybe this is why people aren’t finding any in their change? Come on, please put them into circulation so others can put the in their collections

      • Anne on September 1, 2016 at 8:34 pm

I bought 2 full sealed bags of Peter rabbit coins off eBay Pat Dinsdale some of them are rare, a minting error, gave some coins an extra whisker.

    • Kevin Jeffrey on August 27, 2016 at 6:38 am

i dnt know how Donna managed to get a full sealed bag of peter rabbits. because they where only released through, four gift shops up here in the lake district of which the amount being 65,000 in total and that was from a national trust employee at hawkshead. and you could only get 2 per customer in change on entry to the four attractions of hilltop, wray castle, beatrix potter gallery and world of beatrix potter. also through giftshop purchaces when they where released to celebrate 150yrs of beatrix potters.

      • Yasmin Britton on August 30, 2016 at 8:51 am

Hi Kevin, the Peter Rabbit 50ps have been released into circulation all over the UK now. We are still waiting for the other 4 coins in the series to do the same. Hope this helps. Thanks, Yasmin

      • Billie Mellor on September 17, 2016 at 6:54 pm

  16. Tobiad on August 26, 2016 at 11:51 am

Fourty times their value?! You can buy them for £10 BU from the Royal Mint web site.

  17. Becca on August 26, 2016 at 10:30 am

My husband found the Peter Rabbit one a few weeks ago before I even knew about them (in the London area). I am sad to say I have gone and bought the other 4 online (non circulation) as I am worried I won’t ever find them.
