Lesotho 5 Lisente

Lesotho Loti was first issued in 1966, after the country gained independence from Britain. The Loti was introduced to replace the South African Rand, but the Rand remains legal tender.

The obverse of the 5 Lisente features the Lesotho Coat of Arms, which features a crocodile on a Basotho shield to represent the Basotho, Lesotho’s largest ethnicity group. Each side of the shield is a Basotho horse, and the ribbon at the bottom reads “Khotso, Pula, Nala”, which translates as, “Peace, Rain, Prosperity“.

The reverse features two traditional mud huts and the denomination.

Lesotho is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely 1,000 meters above sea level.  It is also the southernmost country that is completely landlocked by another; it is surrounded by South Africa.

The official languages of Lesotho are English and Southern Sotho.
