To mark the centenary of The RAF and honour their sacrifice in protecting Great Britain’s skies The Royal Mint issued a 2018 commemorative £2 coin. The Royal Air Force was formed in 1918 during the First World War, and is the oldest air force in the world. Since it was formed the RAF have played a significant role in British military history. Its role in The Battle of Britain in 1940 is the RAF’s most famous triumph, and was one of the first major military campaigns fought entirely by air forces. The reverse features a design by Rhys Morgan of the Badge of the RAF - an eagle flies in front of a circle inscribed with the official motto ‘ Per Ardua Ad Astra’, which is Latin for ‘Through adversity to the stars’, with the Imperial Crown at the top.
