The 2015 Navy £2 is now one of the rarest coins ever!

The £2 coin that commemorates the Royal Navy’s efforts in World War One has just become one of the rarest UK coins in circulation.

The Royal Mint have confirmed that just 650,000 2015 Navy £2 coins have been struck for circulation, kicking the 2002 Commonwealth Games England £2 out of its 3rd place position.

Not only is the Navy £2 coin now the third rarest £2 coin in circulation, it is also the 4th rarest UK coin to date. Click here for the complete Change Checker Guide to UK Coin mintages.

The coin that features a battleship design by military artist David Rowlands and the 5th portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is sure to become extremely sought after.

When it comes to collecting, there is one fact which is always inevitable – the rarest coins are always in highest demand.

So the next time you’re flicking through your coins, remember – all coins are not created equal!  There are some you should count yourself lucky to have, and if you come across the 2015 Navy £2 – it might just be worth hanging on to it!

Hi Sue, i’d recommend looking on eBay to see what sort of prices your coins are going for. Hope this helps. Thanks, Yasmin

Am I being stupid but would it not follow, the last coin of the year should be the rarest mintage. Surely if a coin is dated 2016 it would not be minted the same in 2017 ??

Hi, I have one of these first world war hms Belfast £2 coins but there is no writing around the edge, is this normal?

    • Yasmin Britton on November 18, 2016 at 9:18 am

Hi Michelle, the edge inscription should say ‘THE SURE SHIELD OF BRITAIN ‘. Unfortunately it sounds like you may have a fake £2 coin so might be worth getting in contact with The Royal Mint to get it verified. Hope this helps. Thanks, Yasmin

Hi .. there are something wrong on that list.
The rarest £2 coin and probably the rarest British coin ever is the Royal Navy 4th Portrait 2015…Only 100 coins have been struck for circulation, as seen here ..

Ive never seen this coin before now nor the other one you mention “forth portrait” ? where and how do i obtain one/both ?

  12. Vera on October 25, 2016 at 4:16 pm

As we all know there were two versions of Royal Navy £2 coin issued. First 100 coins were issued with the fourth Queen portrait in circulation and then Royal Mint offered them in Presentation Packs. And the coin with the fifth portrait is now widely available to get in change. So, does this mintage of 650,000 issued include the coins with the both portraits or only with the fifth one?

    • Yasmin Britton on October 25, 2016 at 4:19 pm

Hi Vera, this mintage figure only includes the Navy £2 coins (with 5th portrait) that were released into circulation a couple of weeks ago. Hope this helps. Thanks, Yasmin

      • Vera on October 25, 2016 at 4:23 pm

Thank you, Yasmin. I am just wondering what would be a mintage figure for Navy £2 coins with the fourth portrait? Thanks.

      • Yasmin Britton on October 26, 2016 at 8:52 am

Hi Vera, there were 100 of these coins (with the fourth portrait) that were put into the tills at HMS Belfast Visitor centre. The mintage figure for the 2015 Navy £2 BU coins that were issued in presentation packs have not been released by the Royal Mint. The figures should be available soon. Hope this helps. Thanks, Yasmin

Nice artical. Now that the Royal Navy £2 coin has been circulated along with the Magna Carta £2 coin could you (or anyone) please tell me how rare are the 2015 FOURTH portrait Royal Navy and Magna Carta £2 coins? – I have 3 of each from Royal Mint BUNC sets.
