Introducing the new Change Checker eBay Tracker!

I am contacted many times each day by Change Checkers asking, “How much is my coin worth?”.

In truth, the value of a coin is simply what a collector is willing to pay. However, I cannot deny that certain coins do regularly command many times more than face value when sold on auction sites.

There is a lot of misinformation reported in the press regarding coin valuations. News outlets regularly report common coins being worth many thousands of pounds, simply because somebody has listed it for an extortionate amount of money.

In reality, nobody is ever going to pay thousands of pounds for a circulation Benjamin Britten 50p (despite it being a lovely coin!).

To help determine a realistic price for some of the most sought after UK circulation coins, I’m delighted to introduce the Change Checker eBay Tracker, which compares the median price paid for recent completed eBay sales for 10 of the UK’s most popular coins and banknotes.

Change Checker E bay Tracker Graphic FINAL - Introducing the new Change Checker eBay Tracker!

As you may expect, with the high levels of press coverage surrounding circulating coins and banknotes, prices have generally increased over the period.

The Kew Gardens 50p will now set you back £82, £10 more than 6 months ago. The Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p has more than doubled in its selling price and the Olympic Football 50p is now regularly purchased for over £10.

The AA01 serial numbered polymer £10 banknotes are selling for £21 and it’ll be very interesting to see if this level on interest continues during the next 6 months.

How does the eBay Tracker work?

The Change Checker eBay Tracker takes the last 9 sold prices achieved on eBay and gives the median price achieved (rounded to the nearest 50p). By taking the median, rather than an average, we avoid skewing created by one or two excessive prices achieved.

Please note that the Change Checker eBay Tracker is only ever designed to be a guide as to prices achieved on eBay. Prices may vary depending on collector demand and the quality of the coin being sold. It does not provide any guarantee as to future values of coins.

when are the 2018 ID cards available ( the small ones not the large ones for BUNC coins)? as I am looking forward to extending my Change Checker collection.
Also, any news on the availability of the 2 2017 £2 coins?

    • Luke Hearn on February 15, 2018 at 9:48 am

Hi Jim, The 2018 ID cards will be available to purchase from our website next week. Nothing yet on the 2017 £2 coins i’m afraid. As soon as we hear anything, we’ll let you know. Thanks Luke

  3. Adam M on February 11, 2018 at 1:02 pm

    Hi Luke.

I have a few of the 2016 Royal Shield Collector Packs which include the 50p coin that was not put in to circulation (but don’t include the £1 coin). I would be grateful if you could tell me how much this pack may currently be worth and also whether they are likely to go up in value. There does not appear to be any mintage figures for these as yet. Any help would be great.

    Thanks
    Adam

    • Luke Hearn on February 14, 2018 at 4:07 pm

Hi Adam, I’m afraid that we do not offer a valuation service. Instead I would suggest having a look on eBay fo a similar product in the ‘sold listings’ section to see what they have recently sold for. I hope this helps, thanks Luke

Hi John, sorry, it appears there may be an issue with the original link. Here’s the link to the eBay Tracker blog which features the graph: https://blog.changechecker.org/2018/01/30/introducing-the-new-change-checker-ebay-tracker/ For the moment, we have just focused on the top 10 most sought after coins and banknotes. • Luke Hearn on February 6, 2018 at 1:48 pm

Hi Lisa, I would suggest having a look on eBay at ‘recently sold’ items, that way you should get an accurate value for your coins and notes. Thanks Luke

    • Luke Hearn on February 6, 2018 at 1:49 pm

Hi Alfred, this sounds like a mis-strike which, whilst interesting, are not often worth more than face value. Thanks Luke

  12. Rbj. on February 1, 2018 at 9:22 am

I have a silver coin with old queen Victoria on one side and a very young Vic on the other.

  13. Sharon Hutchinson on January 31, 2018 at 8:20 pm

Hi i have been in contact with the royal mint about the 2016 beatrix potter silverproof’s. Apart from the famous 15000 I found out that there were other coins sold on separate issues.I’ve tracked the 500 from the Royal mint/mail and the edition of 250 to beatrix potter world black box but I can’t seem to track the last 250 coins as the royal mint confirmed the overall amount of peter rabbit and friends were 16000.any ideas please ????

  14. Mary on January 31, 2018 at 5:15 pm

I have a £2 coin with this on the back (Tencentenary of the bill of rights ) which I have had since since they were first issued. Is this worth more than the £2. Also dated with 1689 to 1989.

  15. Esme Saunter on January 31, 2018 at 3:04 pm

This is a good idea. Gives a good indication of what people are prepared to pay and not what some sellers think the coins are worth. You see some ridiculous amounts asked on ebay.

    • Luke Hearn on January 31, 2018 at 3:06 pm

Thanks Esme, that’s certainly what we’re hoping to achieve – Luke

  16. James Moffat on January 31, 2018 at 10:44 am

Does it depend on which part of the UK you stay in for certain coins I have five Britannia 2015 and no HMS BELFAST

    • Luke Hearn on January 31, 2018 at 11:46 am

Hi James, It’s really down to the luck of the draw which coins you will find in your change. Circulation coins are released around the whole of the UK as and when post offices and banks require them. Unless there is a smaller release to mark an anniversary or occasion for example, the majority of the coins are not released strategically. Thanks Luke

  17. Andy Chapman on January 30, 2018 at 11:24 pm

I would be interested to know what a full set of the old pound coins would be worth!!! Andy

    • Cazzjones on January 31, 2018 at 1:45 pm

I agree lots of prices out there for individual coins but not a lot of info on the collections as a lot

  18. Charles O'Brien on January 30, 2018 at 5:37 pm

Good idea let people know if they are paying too much or better still if you are doing swaps you’ll know if you should offer two for one sometimes.

  19. April dilworth on January 30, 2018 at 4:37 pm

I am interested in the value of different coins as I collect coins and don’t know the value of them at all

  20. Adam Thomas on January 30, 2018 at 4:20 pm

    Hi Luke,
    Is this an App?..
Cant see where i can access the info.
    Thanks

    • Luke Hearn on January 30, 2018 at 4:26 pm

Hi Adam, The data is displayed in the graphic in the blog for the 10 coins and banknotes. I hope this helps- Luke

    • Chubby on January 30, 2018 at 4:34 pm

      Adam thomas… my boy!

  21. Jane Allen on January 30, 2018 at 4:10 pm

Although a good idea to share the possible value of these coins on Change Checker doesn’t this now make it more difficult to get hold of these coins by swapping?
Surely, Change Checkers will not want to part with their more valuable coins which will now defeat the object of having the Swap Centre.

    • Luke Hearn on January 30, 2018 at 4:15 pm

Hi Jane, thanks for your comment. To be honest, the majority of coins and notes on this list are well known to be rare and therefore more expensive. With a lot of misinformation in the press and people listing coins for vastly inflated prices on auction websites, the point of this list is to track the prices collectors are actually paying for the most sought after coins. Therefore giving Change Checkers an accurate guide to how valuable they are. I hope that this helps – Luke
